You may never thought of the idea of making dog treats for your pupper, but you’ve been reading the awful things that manufacturers put in doggie snacks. Try making your furry friend a special treat this holiday season and you’ll see what a happy dog looks like!homemade dog treats

If you get the cute bone shaped cookie cutter from Amazon, all the better. But your pooch probably won’t complain if you just use a regular old biscuit cutter this time. You never make biscuits for the family?

Not to worry, you can improvise with the right sized glass bottle.

There are many dog treat recipes out there but the dogs I’ve known  loved bacon (who doesn’t), peanut butter and considering the season, pumpkin seemed appropriate. Something for Fido to munch while you sip your pumpkin spice latte.

This recipe should make about thirty large dog treats. As alway, your mileage may vary.

Ingredients for Dog biscuits:

  • 1 cup pumpkin
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup oil*
  • 2½ cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease, melted
  • ¼ cup smooth peanut butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine pumpkin, peanut butter, eggs, and oil in a bowl.

Add in baking soda and whole wheat flour.

Stir until a stiff dough forms. Knead dough or mix just until flour is incorporated.

Roll out dough with a rolling pin and use a cookie cutter to cut out dog bone shapes, or just bake into little circles like cookies.

Bake for 15 minutes. If you have an irregular shape, watch for the edges!

Whisk the bacon grease and peanut butter until very smooth.

Drizzle over the treats and cool till glaze hardens (it does best in the fridge or freezer).

You can also use canola oil or coconut oil in place of the bacon grease in the glaze, But BACON<Woof!

All ingredients are considered safe for dogs, but as with humans, it’s always a good idea to make sure there are no doggie allergies or sensitivities to any of the ingredients

Refrigerate until you are ready to present to your furbabies.  Warning: you’ll need to make more for your friends’ dogs!
